Rio is a seven-year-old German Shepherd that started with the Dayton Police Department in 2020. He is a dual-purpose Narcotics/Patrol dog certified in the detection of felony drugs. Since he started his career, he has been deployed hundreds of times to assist with everything from demonstrations at local schools to the apprehension of violent criminals. He has helped locate and seize large quantities of drugs and money used in the sale and trafficking of illegal narcotics. He was shot in the line of duty in March 2021 while protecting his handler but returned to work two weeks later.

Rio loves to work and when his vest comes out, he couldn’t be more excited. He will then sprint to the cruiser ready to go. At home though, he knows how to also just be a pet and loves to run around the back yard playing with his sibling. He also will not miss the chance for a tummy rub.
