Gunner is retired from the Chicago Police Department as a member of the Transportation Security Administration – TSA National Explosive Detection Canine Team Program (NEDCTP) and was trained and certified at Lackland Air Force Base in the DOD Military Working Dog Program. Gunner is an 8-year old male German Shorthair Pointer trained in explosive detection. He honorably served at Chicago O’Hare and Midway International Airports responding to bomb threats, suspicious items such as unattended bags and vehicles, dignitary VIP sweeps, and protecting the traveling public.
Gunner was medically retired this past December (2024) due to being diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his right rear leg. Gunner will need medication for the rest of his life to battle the cancer that he is fighting to survive. It is currently unknown how much time Gunner has with us due to this aggressive cancer and the very high chance of it metastasizing somewhere else in his body. Now retired, all medical costs are now the responsibility of his still actively serving handler.
