K9 Hondo graduated from TOPS Kennels in June of 2017. One of the largest K9 Classes in the history of TOPS. K9 Hondo came to us from a breeder at TOPS, meaning he was born here. The interesting part of the deal was that Hondo was the offspring of my at the time current K9 Lando, who we unfortunately lost early in 2016. At the time that Lando sired a litter of puppies, but we had no clue that one of those puppies would be working here. It was through the generosity of Tops, village personnel, village residents, and folks from around the country who donated money to purchase Hondo. Without those donations we were not able to continue the program.
Fast forward one year and Hondo had an unfortunate accident with a car, he was struck by a moving vehicle. It was suggested at the time that he be medically retired, but through prayers and rehabilitation Hondo returned six months later to full active duty. Hondo continued assisting officers with drug and article searches, Conservation Police with Boat searches, and other communities in the area with a variety of tasks on a specialized K9 can do.
All that being said and done Hondo is nearing his 8th birthday. And age is catching up with him faster than I could’ve imagined. Arthritis is setting it, making it difficult for him to perform his duties without pain. This is why I chose to retire Hondo so that he may live out the rest of his days in comfort at home. If you happen to see us out walking please don’t hesitate to say hello, he would love to make your acquaintance.
